2024 Plant Swap

The 2024 Plant Swap was held by the Morton Building at the Scott County Extension Office on Saturday, October 12.  Everyone brought lots of perennials, herbs and houseplants to give away.  In addition to the plants, attendees were provided with information on culture and care for the plants.

Many of the Scott County Master Gardeners, members of the 2024-25 Master Gardener class and interested members of the public came and picked up a variety of plants to add to their gardens.  At the end of the day, all of the plants were gone and everyone who attended seemed to be happy with their acquisitions.

Boone County Arboretum Field Trip

The Scott County Master Gardeners took their Fall 2024 field trip to the Boone County Arboretum.  The manager, Chris, was very generous with his time and expertise taking us around a portion of the park to illustrate the variety of woody plants as well as annuals and perennials throughout the property.  The collection includes not only many native Kentucky species but varieties from across the world as well as many new cultivars.

The arboretum has relationships with large commercial plant breeders to serve as test sides.  We saw many plantings from Proven Winners that are being piloted at Boone County Arboretum.

After our two hour tour, we assembled at a covered area with four tables for a picnic of cold cuts, chips and watermelon.  While we were having lunch we met with a group volunteering in the park preparing for their annual plant sale.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the outing and is looking forward to another field trip soon.  Some snapshots from the trip are available HERE.

2024 Garden Expo debriefing

The 2024 Scott County Garden Expo was another tremendous success.  We counted 303 visitors to the Expo this year not including Master Gardeners, volunteers, Extension agents and staff, vendors and exhibitors.  The room looked great and the flow of visitors was smooth.  Several inquiries were made regarding becoming a Master Gardener and all vendors, exhibitors and guests seemed pleased with the event.  Master Gardeners sold $782 in plants and hundreds of begonia plants were given away by Etter Lane Gardens.

Possible ideas for improvement include revisiting and increasing education displays, perhaps moving from raised beds to other topics.  We need to have Home Vegetable Garden books available as well as information cards on becoming a Master Gardener.

Complete notes from the debriefing meeting are available HERE.
